Big W is a network Australia discount department store, which was founded in the area of New South Wales in 1964. The company is a division of Woolworths Limited and currently operates 186 stores, with about 22,000 employees across Australia and Asia. The company recently has suffered setbacks and the future is not in doubt. Westfield Warringah Mall (formerly known as Big W Warringah Mall) is a large indoor shopping center in the suburb of Brookvale, Sydney, Australia.
Big W Warringah Mall opened on 4 April 1963 and developed by Hammerson Group around with about 53, including h. g. Palmer (closed in 1965), Nock & Kirby, the Grace Brothers, Woolworths and David Jones. Ten years later, the Center saw the opening of new stores Grace Brothers was the increase in status by the housewives of the store in 1973.

That same year a fire broke out in the original Woolworths stores that killed two female workers. Fifty other shops have also opened, followed by the opening of the Hoyts Twin Cinema Complex in the early 1980s. Big W Warringah Mall was featured in the movie BMX bandits with two young BMX experts, P.J. (Angelo D’Angelo) and goose (James Lugton), meets Judy (Nicole Kidman) who works as a collector trolley. In the mid-1980s, Target stores opened with 20 shops. Big W Warringah Mall is included in sales Australia Hammerson’s AMP property portfolio capital in 1994.
In the late 1990s, the Center expanded, with Woolworths has been moved. The Centre was opened in December 1999, with about an additional 90 stores. This development included the field extra food, extra cinemas, stores 60 other specialties, followed by the opening of a Coles Supermarket and Dick Smith Electronics Powerhouse in 2000.
In October 2012, AMP capital and Westfield group exchanging interests in seven centers, including the Warringah Mall into a 50/50 joint venture between the two companies. As part of the deal, the management of the Centre was moved from Westfield AMP Centre rebranded Westfield Warringah Mall. In July 2014, as part of a restructuring of the Westfield group, it came under the control of Scentre Group
Big W Warringah Mall Service
In 2007, Big W began already been trialing the provision of Optometry services in South Australia and since then, the service has been added to selected stores in Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales and Australia capital territory. Big W is the first company in Australia to use the self-serve checkouts, which was introduced in 2003 on a trial basis in two large shops Sydney and started developing throughout Australia in late 2005.
In August 2014, Big W launches first party store in Rouse Hill, New South Wales and the second one in the center of the newly renovated in Macquarie North Ryde in New South Wales. There is currently 134 store is across Australia.
Big W is the largest and leading retailers of physical books and toys in Australia.
The future for big W
In November 2016, Chief Executive Sally Macdonald resigned. The company is not yet at its peak for some time, and there is speculation about the future of the company. It reported annual losses of 1,235 billion in August, and with the resignation of the Macdonald’s share price which dipped and those of rivals, like Target and K-Mart, Ascend. It’s just loaded with Master of hardware networks and many of his business fuels in an effort to raise capital. The commentators are still divided on whether it can recover. While it is indeed possible, the main problem seems to be that Woolworths Group “somewhat dysfunctional at the moment”.
